Can you set students pre-lecture preparatory work so that the lecture can be more active?
Have you let them know that they will need to participate – and checked that they have the necessary equipment?
Does your lecture have a clear introduction and flow logically with clear steps? Some lecturers find an overview slide useful – it can help students catch up if they drop out of a call and have to re-join.
If you are including passive learning (e.g. lecturing to your students), break material into discrete chunks of content that are 10 – 15 minutes long. Consider activities for each section that will reinforce learning goals AND introduce active learning.
Are you using visuals or multi-media to add variety and clarity? If so, do they translate to a remote lecture and are they accessible? Contact your ed-tech team for support if necessary.
